Dubstep - that menace

8 10 2009

During the last couple of years, dubstep has become quite the phenomena worldwide and has since even stranded to Finland. In fact, its rise has been so great, that it has even grown an interest outside Finlands borders of the many producers that have made their names known in the last few years. The dub circles have grown substantially, especially in the more liberal and willing university towns of finland and the range of these events has presented the crowd with an admirable variety of entertainment. Many clubs already feature re-occuring bass lovers nights and in the spring of 2009 dubstep even prevailed in the Tampere film festival with its’ music videos and documents. Last weekend, the bass lovers gathered in Helsinki for three nights in a row, and now, Tampere is up.

Last Thursday, Helsinki meddlers huddled up at Beetroot for a domestic experience and Friday featured a Pangaea, at Kuudes Linja, but unfortunately on such a short notice that the crowd was timidly scarce. It did gladden me to notice that the audience had genuinely taken an interest to good music, since the bar lacked any audience of its own, as Pangaea took a hold of the stage. The set was way different than I had expected and the night was all too short, but if that’s not an indication of fun, I don’t know what is. From what I heard, Saturdays dubstep was a smash hit at Kalasatama. They had had a Tampere vs. Helsinki -session that had blown the audience right off their asses. Thank you for that amazing fall storm, that made me miss this even. You can imagine my disappointment as I heard the venue was packed, the event awesome and the tension something out of a 80’s dance movie.

Here’s some evidence:

Tampere was announced as the winner and this weekend that’s where the party will be! For the fourth time, manSEDANse - festival will tickle the audience with a more (alternative?) electronic spread, from Thursday throughout Sunday in many different venues, featuring widely different artists. Today Telakka will stretch its’ religion with some Ponytail, renowned from Clouds and Niclas Kristiansson, known as the notorious Non Person. Fridays dance will be enormous, I’ll bet. Trusted domestic forces Desto, Dead-O and so on will open the evening for the visiting Brits Appleblim and Dusk + Blackdown. My memories from dubstep colliding with squat are fond, as are my memories of previous manSEDANse - festivals. THIS IS the best time of the year. Music will continue throughout Saturday and Sunday, and there will be plenty of things to be done outside the clubs as well, for example as exhibitions. You can check out the rest of the program here

Fresh from Finland » Dubi ristiretkellä…

Dubstep on parin viimeisen vuoden aikana nostanut päätään tasaisesti Suomessa niinkin paljon, että se on huomattu ulkomailla asti. Suomesta tulee monia maailmallakin nimekkäitä tuottajia, ja toisaalta tanssit kasvavat tasaisesti yliopistokaupung…
