Fresh from Finland

Dubliners Sleep Thieves is among those bands, that you just wish could reach out to more people. The EP: “It Was Only a Satellite” reveals that the band is matured enough to be found, despite its’ sole one year of age. The sound isn’t unheard of before, but refined and fine-tuned, does it really have to be? From a long list of influences, comes a sound that is refreshingly original after all. Sleep Thieves’ MySpace features a long list (no really, hundreds..) of influences, of which a remarkable lot is part of my favorite listenings, so it would have had to be the littlest miracle, if I didn’t enjoy the band. The list includes a vast variety of genres, from electro to indie rock, post-rock to hip-hop, IDM to grunge as well as from punk to brit pop.

The closest resemblances are to be found outside that list incidentally. It Was Only a Satellite varies in style as the songs change, but the cheery almost cocky synth pop and electro, brings to mind something in between Of Montreal and Au Revoir Simone. The shorter This Is Not an Exit on the other hand, sounds like a Crystal Castles’ remix of CSS. Of the listed influences, all have contributed to the final sound, and for example, Bat for Lashes aka Natasha Khan can be thought to be the inspiration for the female double vocals. In all sincerity, I don’t want to compare Sleep Thieves to anything, since their sound is more their own than anything borrowed.

The cute four track EP is strong from start to finish, but the more experimental Osumi seemed to surface as a favorite among the tracks. The tracks available on MySpace also bring forth the same quality. Here’s to the band reaching their audience - these tracks are just hard to not like.
